What is an Assemblage?

In studio, we have read the article “What is an Assemblage?” by Thomas Nail which discuss the book of “A Thousand Plateaus”” by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari which describes their invention of the concept of the assemblage. Three main elements of an assemblage are described as mobile operators (personae), concrete elements and abstract machine.

In summary, I can say that mobile operators connect the concrete elements together according to their abstract relations which means conditional relations. When one conditioning relation is changed by personae so does the concrete element as co-adaptation. That makes it capable of possibilities of the abstract machine. So, abstract machine is set of relations that change as the elements change in a kind of mutual transformation with personae.

After discussing the Assemblage concept, we were assigned to construct an abstract machine with its conditional relations. It contains various scape (earth, water, air, etc.) relations which is mediated by a term that is chosen from the terms that we have produced previous semester as a studio.

My term is “Landuse Membrane”.
